Astoundingly good dark-horse Socket 462 CPU coolerSep 23, 2009

I'll be honest -- I bought this cooler mainly because it was cheap when I needed a quieter CPU cooler for a Socket 462 board. I'd never heard of the manufacturer.
You probably haven't, either. Don't let that deter you.
This is a simple, well-made, extremely effective cooler at a great price. Its mostly-aluminum construction makes for light weight, but the copper core gives it good ability to sink and transfer CPU heat. The wedge-shaped design makes it very easy to install despite its relatively large-diameter (80mm) fan. I installed it in place of a Thermaltake Volcano 7+; the WhisperRock IV is a third of the cost and a fraction of the weight of the Volcano 7+, but it maintains the CPU temperature within 0.5°C to 1°C of the much more expensive Thermaltake cooler. Unlike some of the high-zoot über-coolers targeted at bleeding-edge power gamers, if the WhisperRock's fan ever fails, half a hundred manufacturers make standard 80mmx25mm fans that'll bolt right on, straight off the shelf. You probably already have a spare in your parts box.
Best of all, the WhisperRock IV is all but silent. While the Volcano's 48dBA, 7000-rpm whine is audible from the next room, the WhisperRock IV is almost inaudible at 19dBA, even right next to the machine with the cover open.
It's effective, it's light, it's inexpensive, it's almost silent, it's easy to install. The translucent blue fan is even all ready for LED or EL illumination, if you like that sort of thing. What more could you ask?
Bad FanJan 30, 2012

Pro: Cheap. Fan is easy to replace. Con: Cheap. The fan was not quiet at all and the fin density is low. In addition, even though the fan did continually spin, the speed sensor would keep dropping out indicating 0 speed momentarily. This caused the alarm on the computer to constantly keep on a frequency of between 1-2 times a minute. Needless to say, this became quite annoying. I replaced the fan with a thermaltake fan and all of the problems went away, and it is quiet!
Cool!Mar 19, 2011
By Luis Dissett I have and old system (ca. 2003). With the old heatsink/fan, it was usually reaching temperatures over 90C (it was at 70C shortly after it started). I installed this cooler/fan combo, and the hottest it has been since is 56C.

By Drew I received the heat-sink/fan four days post-order. Installation was quick with the exception of the heat-sink clamp barely clearing a few capacitors on mobo (K7S41GX). Overall performance with IC7 temps average 35°C to 39°C with AMD Athlon XP 2600+ Barton. Fans are 2000RPM+ and are quiet. Overall great product for price.
Very quietMar 04, 2010
By M. Smith This cooler is everything claimed. It is so quiet I sometimes forget the computer is on. If you have an Athlon computer with the stock cooler, you owe it to yourself to replace it with one of these.
