Noctua 80x80x25mm fan "NF-R8"

NoctuaSound-optimised blade geometry and profile: The NF-R8 is the first fan employing a novel 80mm rotor which was developed by the Austrian Institute for Heat-Transmission and Fan Technology (Österreichisches Institut für Wärmeübertragung und Ventilatorentechnik, ÖIWV). Thanks to the special optimisation of the blade geometry towards ultra low noise application, the NF-R8 is up to 10% more quiet than current high-end fans at the same flow rate.

Self-stabilising oil-pressure bearing (SSO bearing): The NF-R8 series are equipped with a magnetically centred, self lubricating oil-pressure bearing that provides a new level of quietness and long-term stability.

5Part of My Quest for a Quiet PCSep 15, 2008
By Ray "A Reader"
As part of my quest to quiet an older PC desktop computer, I researched quiet PC case fans, and came up with the Noctua 80mm fan. Designed and built in Austria, the fan produces a generally low decibel level, particularly when compared with other case fans. When I received my fan and installed it, I was amazed at its quietness. I would not hesitate to spend some $20 on one of these Noctua's anytime I was upgrading my desktop machine with this level of quietness. By the way, the fan comes in sizes all the way from 80mm to 120mm, so make sure you know the size your particular desktop machine uses. This fan's design shows what some computer-based development, coupled with acoustic sound testing and revision, can produce. I say "Bravo!" (But I say it in a whisper...)

Note: If you need the same fan in a 120mm form factor, try:

4Not as quiet as I expected for the priceMar 06, 2008
By John Bales
I'd read a number of reviews stating what great, quiet fans the Noctua is, so I guess I was expecting a lot. However, once installed it was not nearly as quiet as I'd hoped (I'm using it on a Windows Home Server which is running 24/7 so I wanted as quiet as possible). I suspect a lot has to do with it being an 80mm model, though I did install a 120mm one on the back of the case and it was louder than the fan it replaced. On paper the specs look great and if the fan has the lifespan quoted, then it'll be a great fan. Just be aware that quietness is subjective and one person's quiet may be another person's noisy!

5Quiet. Smooth. Ugly.Oct 11, 2011
By Oreoflow
This is an ugly fan. It really doesn't fit in with any case design, because most cases are black, but this fan is brown/tan. That being said, if you don't care about what it looks like, since your case is closed most of the time anyway, then this is a great fan. It's quiet and smooth. It comes with a few different adapters so that you can choose the speed/noise that works for your case. In my situation, I could use the adapter to slow the fan down the most (just needed a little airflow) and it runs silently. Just what I needed for my home theater PC. If you don't care how loud it is, I would go with a cheaper option; but if you want a quiet choice, this one is great.

5Great, quiet fan, but doesn't come with an adapter for 2 wire applicationsFeb 15, 2011
By R. K. G. "r.k.g."
I purchased this fan to replace a faulty fan in my Antec Quattro 850W power supply. The old fan was making a loud whining noise after about 3 years of use. This fan, as expected, instantly solved the problem. My case is an Antec P182 with water cooling on the CPU and GPU. With this fan installed, all that I can hear are the 120 mm case fans whirring at low speed, and can no longer hear the power supply fan. I think it is a small improvement over the standard fan which was in the Antec power supply to begin with. I am hoping it will last longer than the old fan.

The only caveat with this kit, is that the Noctua comes with several adapters for various plugs, but I was somewhat surprised it did not come with a 3 conductor to 2 conductor adapter (something that would simply terminate the yellow tachometer wire but connect directly to my power supply pins with the correct polarity for the red/black wires). It was easy enough to just replace the 3 conductor connector with the one from my old fan since the terminal pins were the same size, but I just thought it could be cleaner to include a 3-to-2 adapter. This is not such a bad thing to remove a star though since it's such an easy fix.

5Noctua impresses againApr 07, 2010
By Dustin Schultz
There isn't much to say about this fan, it is quite perfect. As with all Noctua products, the quality is great and it is virtually silent. The fan comes with a couple of power adapters to regulate the RPM of the fan, but honestly, you can't hear it at full power.

As a side note, I am also a fan of the styling. The colors are very unique and really let everyone know it is a Noctua.
