5Good choice, just don' buy it from Platinum MIcroDec 11, 2010

The fan is heavier and more quiet then most others, also more expensive. If you buy this from Platinum Micro they'll mail you different little noisier model. And they don't accept returns without return authorization #, and don't respond to email, so you'll be stuck with it.

5Dead silent, best fans I've ever ownedJul 07, 2010
By Psymn
I've gone to great lengths to silence my PCs, and these fans were the last ones I will ever have to buy, for two reasons.

1. They are nearly silent up close and undetectable from a few feet away.
2. One of my fans died an early death after 4 months, and Noctua quickly replaced it with a new one. No hassles at all, I simply filled out their web claim form, and attached a PDF of my reciept, and the new fan was on its way from Austria. I had the new one within 7 days of filing my claim.

The fans come with rubber mounts, and 3 speed adjusting cables. I'm not sure what type of electronics are in these cables, but each one will lower the fan's maximum RPM. I used the highest RPM cables and combined with my PC's fan management software I can hardly hear them.

These fans were so good that I replaced my CPU cooler with one from Noctua as well. The combination is wonderfully silent, and also does a great job of keeping my system cool. I have a i7-920 overclocked at 3.4ghz and idle temps are around 40C with heavy gaming loads around 60C.

5Quality fan that is whisper quietDec 08, 2010
By Michael Davis
I know a computer fan is not very exciting but it is worth a quick review if it helps others. I installed this fan in my wine fridge since the one in there died. So my review might be a bit simpler than others. FYI these fans all have 3 pins and will work perfectly in a 2-pin setup, the 3rd wire (yellow) is just for feedback and completely optional.
Anyway this fan at full speed is extremely quiet and moves a large amount of air. Not sure what else you could ask for except maybe better colors.
So if your looking for a fan that goes into someplace you want to put it and forget about it (knowing its going to work) this could be your fan. The warranty and hour rating clearly makes this one of the longest lasting.

4A great fan!Jan 23, 2012

If you care about fans in your computer, then this is a great choice. If you are saying "WTF would someone spend that much on a fan when I can just crank up the audio?" then save your money for the next release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

The Noctua does a good job of moving air with negligible sound. This the tradeoff I am looking for - how little noise can I create and still maintain system performance. It does a much better job at moving air than the Scythe Slip Stream SY1225SL12SL 120mm 500 RPM Fan I added at the same time. Of course, the Slip Stream is also near silent but there's that trade off... The Slip Stream doesn't move enough air to really provide meaningful cooling. The Noctuas do.

I am trying to migrate my system to true silent operation. Currently, I am using a PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk II 650W High Performance SLI CrossFire ready Power Supply compatible with Intel Sandy Bridge Core i3 i5 i7 and AMD Phenom PSU, a Corsair Cooling Hydro-Series All-in-One High-Performance Liquid CPU Cooler CWCH60], a [[ASIN:B002WUOHCS PowerColor ATI Radeon HD5750 SCS3 1 GB DDR5 2DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort PCI-Express Video Card 1 GBD5-S3DH, an OCZ Technology 120 GB Agility 3 SSD- 3G SATA 6.0 Gb-s 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive AGT3-25SAT3-120G and two Hitachi Deskstar 3.5" 1TB 7200RPM SATA II 32MB Cache Internal Hard Drive 0F10383 in a Diablotek EVO ATX Mid-Tower Computer Case - ATX, Mcro ATX, 4x External 5.25-Inch Bay Drives, 5x Internal 3.5-Inch Bay Drives, 7x Expansion Slots and 3x Front USB Ports CPA-6170 (Black). I have my Intel Core i5-2500K Processor overclocked at 4.2Ghz steady.

The Diablotek case came with several fans - none of which I am using anymore. I have one of these Noctua (NF-S12B FLX)- 120mm Adjustable Speed Fan, 1200/900/600 RPM, Bevelled Blade Tips on the radiator for the CPU cooler and another mounted in the front of the case. The Scythe Slip Stream SY1225SL12SL 120mm 500 RPM Fan is on the top of the case helping push ambient air out the top vents.

My goal, eventually, is to reduce the speed of the Noctuas. I don't think I'll be able to eliminate them. I also plan to replace the PSU with a Seasonic 460W 80 Plus Gold Fanless ATX12V/EPS12V Power Supply - X-460/SS-460FL so I'll cut the fan count down but will have greater need to move ambient hot air out of the case.

I gave this four stars for two reasons:

1. Switching fan speeds means switching out a connector with an in-line resistor. At this price, it would have been nice to have a slide-selector. Maybe even a variable resistor so I can adjust the fan speed more precisely.

2. The price. This is a pricey fan. You don't want to use these in a system with 5+ fans. It's just too costly. Of course, the idea is you use these in a system with fewer fans.

2Loud and expensive.Jan 13, 2012
By MollipZ "MollipZ"
I like Noctua's P12 version of this fan, but the S12 has about the worst noise to airflow ratio I've ever encountered. At anything other than the lowest speed, it emits a loud whirring. At top speed it screams while pushing air hardly justifying the volume, making me almost feel pity for it. 18.1 is Noctua's claim for full speed, 1200rpm, but it's closer to 30db. These fans have a psychological effect on some buyers: they're noctua, hence they must be silent. But there are fans out there that are more quiet at 900rpm than the S12 is at 600, while pushing more air at half the price. I gave it two stars for the nice accessories it came with, which I found useful for other fans after I stuffed this one in a drawer. Google some comparisons and do some research before buying on reputation alone.
