Pulse Width Modulation
The use of a 4 wire PWM controlled fans is a means to reduce the overall system acoustics. The expectation is a 4 wire PWM controlled fan when properly implemented will be significantly quieter than a similar 3 wire fan.

 Quiet fan. Needs 4-pin PWM motherboard power connector.Oct 13, 2009

I bought this fan hoping to have automatic chassis fan speed control via the motherboard. Though my motherboard CPU fan connector was 4-pin, the chassis fan connector was only 3-pin. Your MB chassis fan power connector must be a 4-pin connector for this fan to run as designed. The power connector will fit onto a 3-pin chassis fan power connector but the fan will run at maximum speed, and then it's far from silent.
If you've got a 4-pin connector, this should be an excellent fan.

Have been using two of these as the fans on a Noctua NH-U12P CPU cooler for over two years. The computer runs 24/7. The PWM works fine with a PWM splitter cable and the fans are quiet. Easily able to use the Noctua wire clips for attaching the fans. Highly recommended.
