Super quiet Xeon 5500 series coolerAug 22, 2011

Got a pair of these CPU coolers to replace very noisy Dynatron heatsink fans. Since my dual Xeon server is located in a home setting (not business server room), loud CPU fans make for a bad situation. The old cooler was set to 'idle' at 45% max RPM in the BIOS and spin up to 100% when required; this was a problem. At 100% RPM the Dynatron fans were very loud and whiny. So when the server launched scheduled processes or just got busy, the fans kicked into high gear.
The installation was without issue; the hardest part was attaching the fans to the heatsinks with the included clips after they were seated on the mobo. I did not use either of the included 'low-noise' or 'ultra-low-noise' adapters since my mobo can be set to control the CPU fan speed. I set it to the operate within a 60-100% RPM band.
Long story short, the Noctua coolers are super quiet; I think they are less noisy than the two 120mm case fans (there's also a the very large case-side fan, but it's basically inaudible). They are definitely quieter than the PSU fan.
I think these coolers were custom designed for dual Xeon configurations and they deliver the quietness. I will be monitoring the CPU temperatures over the next month to see whether they deliver in that funcational area also.
