Sweet JBOD drive expansion for your LianLi case - just as long as you don't need hot swap.Feb 10, 2009

I have a Lian Li PC-A12 case - (which is really just a 60 series with a fancy door) and needed to mount 6 hard drives. This type of case only comes with an internal cage that mounts 3 drives. At first I just used 5 1/4 to 3 1/2 conversion trays - but worried about the cooling of the drives. The EX-34 unit not only allows you to mount 4 drives in 3 bays, it does so providing air cooling lanes between drives and a nice 120mm fan to execute effective cooling. The whole unit is made of aluminum and comes with a foam dust trap, rubber anti-vibration gaskets for the drive mounting screws (and includes all hardware). It's exactly what you'd expect for Lian Li: exquisitely made, fairly priced, and a bit fiddly to install.
What's hot:
*All aluminum.
*Huge quiet 120mm fan
*space for air lanes between all 4 drives
*rubber anti-vibe gaskets around mounting screws.
*looks neat and tidy when installed
*all hardware and power adapters necessary are included
*This unit is drive agnostic. It doesn't care if you're using IDE or SATA, or how you want to power the drives. You address each drive separately from the rear. I.e. there are no electronics in this case accessory.
What's not:
*Squeezing that big box into the 3 bays wasn't easy. It took me 15 sweaty minutes and required perfect alignment.
*To add more drives requires completely uninstalling the unit to gain access to it.
*To clean the foam air filter requires completely uninstalling the unit to gain access.
*It's a closed unit so is not suitable for hot swap drives.
All in all, if you've got a big Lian Li case and need to mount a lot of drives this classic unit is the weapon of choice. Unless you need hot swap...
